Guiding physical recovery, supporting stronger everyday movement

Physical Therapy helps older adults who are having difficulty with walking, balance, strength, movement, or physical functioning after an illness, injury, surgery, or hospitalization. Someone may need physical therapy when getting out of a chair, walking around the home, climbing steps, or moving between surfaces has become more difficult than before. Across Maryland, home-based physical therapy can address these concerns within the person’s usual environment, allowing movement and mobility activities to relate directly to everyday tasks.

How It Works

During home-based therapy, the therapist may work with the individual on practical movement and mobility tasks such as:

  • Therapeutic exercises for strength and flexibility
  • Balance and coordination activities
  • Walking and mobility training
  • Practice with transfers between beds, chairs, and other surfaces
  • Functional movement exercises
  • Instruction in prescribed home exercises

What to Expect

Physical Therapy is generally provided through scheduled home visits, with treatment activities based on the individual’s physical abilities and clinical needs. The therapist guides the person through exercises and movement activities while observing their ability to perform specific tasks. Treatment activities may be adjusted as strength, balance, mobility, or functional abilities change over the course of care.
